Wet-cell nickel-cadmium batteries were invented in 1899. Among rechargeable battery technologies, NiCd rapidly lost market share in the 1990s, to NiMH and Li-ion batteries; market share dropped by 80%. A NiCd battery has a terminal voltage during discharge of around 1.2 volts which decreases little until nearly the end of discharge.
Ni–Cd batteries contain between 6% (for industrial batteries) and 18% (for commercial batteries) cadmium, which is a toxic heavy metal and therefore requires special care during battery disposal. In the United States, part of the battery price is a fee for its proper disposal at the end of its service lifetime.
Nickel‐cadmium batteries are rechargeable, but they are too bulky to be used for many purposes. The manufacturers of electronic devices are constantly trying to make their products smaller and more powerful. Thus they want batteries that are smaller, lighter, and more powerful than dry cell and nickel‐cadmium batteries.
